Undead (2003)

Overview

Some meteors crash in a small Australian town, causing people to become zombies. The last survivors take refuge in the house of a creepy grizzled man, who has a thing for firearms. Things go from bad to worse once the survivors realize that the zombie plague is airborne…

The Good

The characters in Undead aren’t the deepest. Some of them are even somewhat one dimensional, but the actors do such a good job with their roles that the movie seems a lot more fun than it should. An example of this would be Mungo McKay as the grizzled Marion . His character starts our creepy and weird and stays that way through the entire movie. However, by the end of the movie we see him soften up a bit towards Rene. McKay’s performance is key here as other actors may have gotten the subtleties required incorrect and his character would have stayed a complete weirdo by the end of the movie. All of the characters really do add a lot to this movie. Like the character of the idiot cop, who is just so over the top that it’s awesome.

From a zombie punching off a person’s head to zombies exploding on contact with a van, the gore is just over the top in this movie. The gore is well done throughout and should keep just about any gore hound satisfied. Some of the action sequences are weird as they seemed to be almost out of place. Marion moves around like gravity is his bitch, but it’s supposed to be parodying action movies of the time like the Matrix. You know the filmmakers were trying to be comedic though when Marion keeps managing to pull out handgun after handgun even after loosing his clothes.

The premise is very original. A lot of zombie movies fall into the trap of having the survivors taking refuge somewhere and then fight off the zombies until the movie is over without ever telling how the zombies came to be. In Undead the cause of the zombies are aliens, who restore almost everyone back to normal at the end of the movie. The scene of Wayne flying his plane over the clouds and passing all the people the aliens have adducted is an interesting visual that probably won’t be replicated anytime soon.

As well, this movie definitely has a sense of humor and that helps. The scene where Rene interacts with a couple of aliens is comedy gold. Another amusing scene is when Marion is remembering his first encounter with the aliens and has to fight off zombie fish. I don’t think there has ever been another movie that featured zombie fish, but I could be wrong.

The Bad

The aliens’ motivation is never fully explained. Is the zombie plague an experiment, or is it just a form of amusement to them? We’re never told, and I would have liked to have known. As well, the ending feels almost like a copout as everything is restored by the aliens. However, they missed one person still infected with the zombie plague and it spreads again. Even with this happening, it sort of makes the rest of the movie feel a little pointless. Why didn’t they just start the movie from that point at the end? After that point is when the real action is going to happen. Lucky this movie was fun to watch, or the ending would have seemed a lot worse.

Why is such a big deal made over the characters discovering that headshots kill the zombies? I mean they call them zombies and know what they are, so why don’t they also know the only way to kill a zombie is to destroy its brain? This discovery is treated like a big surprise by the movie, which I found almost insulting as any zombie fan would have already known that.

The scene in the bunker is interesting, but I don’t understand why there’s no food or water. Marion took the time to put a bag full of guns in the bunker, but he was saving the food and water for last… Talk about having screwed up priorities… Did he just get the bunker installed a few days ago? Is that why he was just getting around to packing food when the zombies attacked? A little clarification on this issue would have gone a long way.

Final Thoughts

Undead is a good zombie movie. Its greatest strength is its originality, which I think will appeal to lots of zombie fans. I would recommend Undead to all horror fans, but especially to zombie fans.
