The Last Man on Earth (1964)

The Last Man on Earth is a movie based on a book called "I am Legend." This book was later adapted into another movie of the same name as the book starring Will Smith. The Last Man on Earth has nothing to do with Will Smith and stars Vincent Price. The plot is summed up in its title. Price is the last man on a earth that has been ravaged by a plague that turns people into vampires. For some reason these vampires are dumb and slow, so they resemble zombies at times. Of course, Price finds out he isn't as alone as he thought and hillarity ensures. And by hillarity, I mean sad tragic events for the main character, Dr. Robert Morgan.

Vincent Price portrays Morgan. I know that Vincent Price is a horror legend, but before watching this movie, I had never really watched much featuring him. From what I saw in the past, Price always came off as over the top, and I never really saw the appeal. In this movie Price is downright awesome. He comes off as a bitter loner, who is doing what he has to to get by. He has moments where he breaks down, but who wouldn't when faced with the same situation? Price's performance is one of the things that kept me interested in this movie.

There are a lot of dead bodies in this film for a movie made in 1964. I loved how the streets were littered with corpses and it really added to the mood. However, the makeup and gore affects are really lacking. By today's stardards, this movie would barely be considered a horror movie. I know the same thing could be said about other older horror movies, but there's something about The Last Man on Earth that just doesn't give it the same legendary feel as Christopher Lee's Dracula or Romero's original Night of the Living Dead.

I've often said in other reviews that some of these older movies aren't for everyone. The Last Man on Earth falls into that category. It's enjoyable, but it isn't going to convert modern viewers into lovers of classic horror movies. If you hate black and white movies, then avoid this movie. However, if you enjoy horror movies of all ages, give this one a try.
