Leprechaun Back 2 the Hood (2003)

Overview

The Leprechaun has lost his gold again and unleashes his terrible wrath against those who have taken it again. He’s also back in the hood again…

The Good

The opening to this movie where the Leprechaun’s origins are explained was well done. It reminded me of something from Creepshow, which is a good horror movie to be compared to. I think that the origins given in Leprechaun Back 2 the Hood work with the other movies as well. The Leprechaun being “the one” is a cool concept. It’s even cool to think that the phrase “the one,” which is a clichéd way in movies today to explain the ultimate good guy, is used for someone as evil as the Leprechaun.

Some credit has to be given to the fact that the plot of this movie isn’t identical to the last Leprechaun move based in the hood. This movie doesn’t follow the norm we often find in low budget horror movies of the sequel being just a watered down version of the previous movie.

The strongest point in this movie is its humor. The white guy buying drugs is especially funny. The story about the new meaning of the word “ninja” is just hilarious. As well, the scene where the tough gang leader/drug dealer answers his cell phone and talks to his girlfriend is only surpassed in humor by a scene that takes place soon after, where the Leprechaun answers the cell phone and tries to hit on the gang leader’s girlfriend. All of the gags I’ve described in this paragraph are funny stuff, and without them the movie would have been a lot worse off.

Perhaps one of the funniest scenes though is when the Leprechaun gets stoned. This has been done in Leprechaun in the Hood, but it’s expanded upon in this movie. We get to see the Leprechaun stumble around so stoned that he can barely stand up. We also get to see the Leprechaun experience the munchies and eventually hotbox a fridge. The humor in this movie is everything a Leprechaun fan could hope for.

The Bad

The actors in Leprechaun Back 2 the Hood don’t have much to work with as the characters aren’t as interesting or entertaining as the characters in Leprechaun in the Hood. None of the actors even come close to touching the awesome performance of Ice T from the first Leprechaun Hood movie. I found the characters seemed like cut outs we’d find in just about any other movie like this one. There’s the goofy comedy character, the bad guy who’s really good on the inside, the girl who dreams of getting out of the hood someday, and so on and so on… Warwick Davis is wonderful as the Leprechaun again, but I just wish the rest of the cast and characters were on par with his performance.

The gore in this movie isn’t the best we’ve seen from the series. There are times when the blood is obviously CGI. Personally, I hate CGI blood because to me it looks incredibly fake. Even compared to the last Leprechaun Hood movie, the gore doesn’t even come close. The Leprechaun’s cool ability to literally blow holes in people is gone, and I’m sure that I’m not the only one who missed it in this movie.

How the Leprechaun dies at the end is just plain weird. He falls into some wet cement and that’s it. Why the cement dries so suddenly doesn’t make sense to me. I know he was weakened from the clover bullets, don’t even get me started on the wonky physics of those things, but wouldn’t he eventually break out of the cement once he regained his powers? Considering all of the CGI effects this movie has in it, I think there should have been a cooler death scene for the Leprechaun.

Final Thoughts

I don’t know if anyone other than Leprechaun fans like me will find Leprechaun Back 2 the Hood very appealing. The humor that has made the Leprechaun movies popular is present in this movie, but I know that a lot of people probably won’t find Leprechaun Back 2 the Hood very funny. I’d say see this movie if you’re a Leprechaun fan, but don’t bother if you aren’t.
