Cemetery Man(1994)

Cemetery Man is a movie that is sort of hard to describe. On the surface, it’s about a care keeper, Francesco Dellamorte, of a cemetery, who takes it upon himself to kill the dead as they start to rise. However, there is a lot more going on in this movie than just that. In fact, there’s so much happening in this movie, that I find I’m almost at a loss to try and explain it all.

I’ve watched this movie twice, and I find there are parts of it that I still don’t understand. I don’t quite understand why the same woman keeps coming back to haunt and torment Francesco under the guise of a strange widow, the mayor’s secretary, and a hooker. I don’t understand the reason Francesco’s assistant, Gnaghi, is so fascinated with the mayor’s dead daughter. And I really don’t understand the end…

I’ve read some explanations for the above and other parts of the movie, but I just don’t think I should have to google a movie after watching it to find out what it was really about. When thinking of what to write about in this review, I considered drawing upon the explanations from the web and trying to explain this movie. However, I just couldn’t help but feel like some sort of pretentious film critic if I did that.

I don’t want to sound overly negative about this movie. I liked Cemetery Man, or Dellamorte Dellamore. There are some parts that a full dark humor, and anyone familiar with this site knows I have a dark sense of humor. The performances, even with the dubbing, are pretty strong all around. And although I find the ending confusing, it is consistent with the rest of the movie.

I think part of what made me like Dellamorte Dellamore when I first saw it was that some parts were so strange and weird that to me they seem almost surreal. My own philosophy on surrealism, and I’m pretty sure this view isn’t anything new, is that surreal art doesn’t have to make sense or need an explanation. So to me, the fact that there are parts in this movie that I don’t understand just makes for an enjoyable surreal experience.

Is a surrealist zombie movie for everyone? Probably not, but I would recommend it to any zombie movie fans with open minds. My suggestion would be to just enjoy the film for what it is, and not to try to understand everything about it.
