Undead or Alive(2007)

Undead or Alive is billed as a zombie western comedy. The plot is that a Native American curse has started turning people into zombies. The two main characters, Elmer, an army deserter, and Luke, a goofball cowboy, end up tangling with these zombies as the curse spreads from an evil sheriff and his deputy to the US army.

There are some funny parts in this movie. Chris Kattan, of Saturday Night Live fame, as Luke is entertaining, but James Denton as Elmer is just as amusing. Some of what happens though would definitely make this movie more of a dark comedy, especially the ending. Just how funny you find this movie will depend on your sense humor, so it’s probably not for everyone.

Undead or Alive is a B movie. There’s no denying that. I think it’s far from the worst B movie I’ve ever seen, but that doesn’t make it any less of a B movie. Zombie fans that are use to movies like 28 Days Later and the Dawn of the Dead remake will probably find a lot to dislike about this movie.

Overall, I liked Undead or Alive, but I didn’t love it. It was an average B movie, and my guess is that it will only appeal to hardcore zombie fans. I was going to say that it might appeal to hardcore Chris Kattan fans too, but I doubt that there’s too many of those out there.

The tone of Undead or Alive is just weird. Most horror fans will probably not find this movie scary enough, and most comedy fans will probably not find its funny enough. It’s never easy to find a good balance in horror comedies, but that doesn’t excuse the shortcomings in this film.

My feelings are probably best summed up this way. I spent 5 dollars to buy this movie at Wal-Mart and I feel like it was worth it. If I had spent 10 or 20 dollars to buy this movie, I would feel like I was cheated.
