28 Weeks Later (2007)

28 Weeks Later is a sequel to 28 Days Later. The problem with sequels is that they are always compared to the original. 28 Days Later was a wonderful zombie movie (Please don't email me about how it wasn't truly a zombie movie because it was close enough for me). However, right away you might notice that none of the actors from the first movie appear in 28 Weeks Later... This alone doesn't make the movie terrible. Dawn of the Dead didn't have any of the characters or actors from the original Night of the Living Dead, and it was still a great zombie movie.

The plot for 28 Weeks Later is actually quite interesting. Britian is being repopulated and rebuilt with the help of the United States Military. Of course you just know that some how the infected are going to show up and miss everything up. My favorite scene in the entire movie is the first one. Seeing the characters hiding in the house and then faced with the decision of letting a boy in or not is done well. Of course this choice ends up attracting the atttention of the infected and the house is overran by them. My absolute favorite moment is when Don is faced with the choice of running away or staying and helping/dying with his wife. He of course makes the smart decision and runs like hell. It's too bad that that decision is the last smart one made for the rest of the movie.

Don's wife survives and ends up being immune to the virus that causes the rage. The down side is that she is still a carrier though. This of course leads her to unintentionally infect Don later in the movie. My problem is that for some reason Don has access to every area in the military controlled city he and his children were living in. Sure he has an important job, but why would someone who is not a member of any sort of military have access to every area?

Once the infection spreads, all of the non-infected are hidden in some sort of underground complex. They freak out, but the military locks them in. However, Zombie Don some how manages to break the door open and infects a lot of people. Don's children are also there and manage to escape. The promise of seeing his two annoying children get torn to pieces is one of the few things that made me finish watching this movie. However, it never happens...

Did I mention that Don's kids manage to sneak out of the safe zone pass many well trained members of the American military? Or that they are actually seen leaving the safe zone, but the U.S. military takes forever to catch up to them? By the way, don't get attached to too many of the characters because just about everyone but Don's children die. I loved when a gang of new characters is introduced in the middle of the movie, and I just knew that everyone of those characters was going to die. If that isn't the defintion of in-depth story telling, I don't know what is.

Honestly, there are a lot worse zombie movies out there than this one. Some of the scenes are fun to watch as long as you don't think about the story too much, and the gore is decent, but nothing special. If you're a diehard fan of the first movie, then you'll probably find something to enjoy in this. I, however, feel that this movie just took a big steaming poop on 28 Days Later. See it if you're curious, but don't get your hopes up.
